Policeraidedaforger’sworkshopinRome.Theyfounddozensofpieces,includingfakePicassosandRembrandtsразанальныйсексItalianpolicehaveseizeddozensofforgedartworksattributedtofamousartistssuchasPicassoandRembrandtinwhatauthoritieshavecalleda“clandestinepaintinglaboratory.”Theinvestigation,ledbytheCarabinieriCommandfortheProtectionofCulturalHeritage,thecountry’sartsandculturepolice,andcoordinatedwiththeRomeprosecutor’soffice,startedwhenauthoritiesbegansearchingforfraudulentworksthathadbeenputforsaleonline,accordingtoapressreleaseissuedbythepolice.Policesaidtheyfoundatotalof71paintings,addingthatthesuspectwasselling“hundredsofworksofdubiousauthenticity”onsiteslikeeBayandCatawiki.PaintingsattributedtothelikesofPabloPicassoandRembrandtHarmenszoonvanRijnwereamongtheworksofart.TherewerealsoforgedpiecespurportingtobefromMarioPuccini,GiacomoBallaandAfroBasaldella,aswellasseveralothercelebratedartists.TheworkshopwherethepaintingswerebeingproducedwaslocatedbypolicetoahouseinoneofRome’snorthernneighbourhoods.Authoritiesarrivedtofindaroomsetupsolelyfortheproductionofcounterfeitpaintings.Amongthematerialsseizedbythepolicewerehundredsoftubesofpaint,brushes,easels,alongwithfalsifiedgallerystampsandartistsignatures.Thesuspect,describedbyauthoritiesasa“forger-restorer,”waseveninpossessionofatypewriterandcomputerdevicesusedtocreatepaintingsandfalsifycertificatesofauthenticityforthefraudulentpieces.Onetacticthesuspectusedwastocollageoverauctioncatalogues,replacingthepainter’soriginalworkwithanimageofthefakearthecreated,policesaid.Thiswouldgivetheappearancethatthefakepaintinghadbeentherealoneallalong.Policealsofoundvariousworksstillintheprocessofbeingmadeontheforger’stablebearingthesignaturesofdifferentartistsleadingthemtobelievethatthesuspecthadcreatedthemrecently.ThisisfarfromthefirsttimethatItalianauthoritieshaveunearthedforgedartworks.Establishedin1969,theCarabinieriartpolicearespecializedincombattingcrimesrelatingtoartsandculture.In2023,theyrecoveredthousandsofartifactsstolenfromgravesandarchaeologicaldigs. |
